The earth is currently facing unprecedented mass extinction of its living species, as more than 60% of wild animal populations have disappeared in the space of 40 years*, while one million animal and plant species out of the estimated eight million on the planet are currently in danger of extinction**.
The main threats for biodiversity are currently related to human activities, with disastrous consequences: deterioration of the quality of life on earth, destruction of the resources necessary for the proper functioning of our societies, surge in infectious diseases, etc. There is still time to act to respond to this alarming situation and reverse the process.
At the heart of the development of our economies, the financial sector can – and must – play a role in the crucial environmental transition of human activities. Karen Degouve, Head of Sustainable Business Development within the ESR department at Natixis, assesses the situation and explains how the financial sector can be part of the solution.
